2018 Competitors

Natalie Arnold (AUS)

Natalie is running her 18th marathon and finishing the 2018 Antarctic Ice Marathon will have her join the elusive 7 Continents Marathon Club. Natalie takes pride in raising awareness and fundraising for a local Gold Coast Charity 4ASD kids, supporting early intervention for families that have kids with autism. She lays claim to being the youngest Australian to complete a marathon on every continent unassisted. Among her favourite races, Natalie has run the London Marathon, Victoria Falls Marathon, Angkor Wat Marathon, Athens Marathon, Winterthur Marathon and Maui Marathon. She's reached the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro and as competed in triathlons; most notably Ironman Australia 2016 was among her very first where one year later she represented her age group at the ITU World Championships for Australia in both 2017 and 2018. The Antarctic Ice Marathon has been a dream of Natalie's for 5 years and she can't wait to achieve her goal. Natalie hopes to inspire other Australians to get active and explore what the world has to offer.

Yunfeng Bai (CHN)

Yunfeng has liked maps since he was a child and the Antarctica continent was very special to him in this regard. He would spend many hours studying the map and is finally looking forward to the moment of landing on the White Continent, a brand new start of life and a time for exploration.  He hopes to bring his daughter with him next time.

Marcin Aslanowicz (POL)

Marcin is a lawyer during business hours and a marathoner and ultramarathoner after hours. The Antarctic Ice Marathon will be his 37th marathon and - at the same time - his seventh continent, so he will officially be joining the The 7 Continents Marathon Club if he completes it. His future goals include, amongst others, completing the last of the World Marathon Majors (Boston), North Pole Marathon, BiegRzeznika (probably the most famous Polish ultramarathon) and Erbil Marathon in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Arunjot Singh Bhalla (IND)

Arun has run 9 full marathons and multiple half marathons in India and in some international destinations.  His personal best for a full marathon is 4 hrs 38 minutes.  In addition to running, he enjoys playing golf and looks forward to running in Antarctica.

Gurmeet Soni Bhalla (IND)

Gurmeet has been running for the past 8 to 9 years.  During that time she has completed over 20 full marathons and 6 ultra marathons including Comrades. Her best time for a full marathon is 3:54.  Her goal is to complete a marathon on all 7 continents.  Beyond running, Gurmeet is also passionate about scuba diving.

Bart Bracke (BEL)

Bart, Carl, Frank and Frederic (from Belgium) have been friends forever. On a wild crazy evening, after many drinks, they decided to go for something rather unusual..the Antarctic Ice Marathon. The preparations were tough, at least for some of them, but Bart says the road towards this magical event was very rewarding.  Of the group of four, one has really developed a running addiction and is stimulating the others to go for it! Bart says they do not have a lot of experience in running marathons (just one to date) but they believe they have the drive, the attitude and of course their reputations to uphold! They hope to create a story which They will remember for the rest of their days.

Campbell Brown (AUS)

Campbell is a 35 year old Aussie that loves sport, travel and a challenge.  When Campbell saw the opportunity to run in Antarctica he jumped at the chance. What better place to run your first marathon?  Campbell will be running the Ice Marathon with 3 great mates Tommy Little, Justin Quill and Lach Spark. 

Yingjie Chang (CHN)

Yingjie started running marathons in 2014 and by 2017 had completed the World Marathon Majors.  To date she has completed 30+ marathons. 

Thiery Cohen (ITA)

Thierry is an Italian/French 55 year old who had spent most of my life in Japan. Thierry imports Italian food and wine into Japan and also owns an organic food factory in Piemonte, Italy.  He ran the North Pole Marathon in 2017 and caught the bug for running crazy marathons. Through running the Ice Marathon, he seeks to raise awareness for Global Warming.

Frederic Coorevits (BEL)

Guenter Engelhart (AUT)

Günter is 56 years old and works at Casinos Austria & Austrian Lotteries as a PR-Manager. The Antarctic Ice Marathon will be his 27th marathon since he started running them in 2003  A finish at the Ice Marathon will complete the seventh continent and he will  enter the Seven-Continents-Marathon-Club. The six other events which he will count are Great Wall Marathon (China), Volcano Marathon (Chile), New York City Marathon (USA), Victoria Falls Marathon (Zimbabwe), Outback Marathon (Australia) and Classic Athens Marathon (Greece). Günter also participates in triathlons and has already finished an Ironman (long distance) in Austria/Carinthia. Günter is married to Tina and they have a 20 year old son called Elias who plays American Football in Austria.

Hassan Esufally (SRI)

Hassan had completed eight marathons across six continents including one full distance Ironman. He holds a double major in Management & Marketing from the University of Melbourne where he attended the prestigious Ormond College. Along with being an Ironman® he has completed the Melbourne Marathon (Australia), Stockholm Marathon (Europe), Colombo Marathon (Asia), Boston Marathon (North America), Big 5 Marathon - run amongst wild animals in the savannah (Africa) and the Inca Trail Marathon (South America). Upon completion of the Antarctic Ice Marathon, he will become the first Sri Lankan in history to accomplish a marathon on all seven continents and be inducted into the 7 Continents Marathon Club.

Song Fang (CHN)

Running makes Song feel free, modest, and peaceful.  In her marathons, she searches for her true freedom and her true self. 

Yishang Fang (CHN)

As the president of Hainan Meilekang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. and Ruoyao Teyi Food Co., Ltd., Yisheng is going to the Antarctica for the first time, and running a marathon for the first time as well!  He hopes the Antarctic Ice Marathon is an extraordinary experience.

Shawn Patrick Gray (USA)

Shawn is 49 years old and originally from Houston, TX. He’s lived in Asia for the past 24 years and currently lives in Mumbai India. He was a 3 pack a day guy 5 years 
ago;  gave the smokes up and picked up running to heal his body. He has run the last 4 NYC marathons and the Mumbai marathon in 2018

Seamus Hennessy (IRL)

In terms of marathon running, this is the first marathon for Seamus and as such his first continent to complete a race on! Seamus is running to raise awareness and funds for a charity project he set up called RunningforJosie.  Through running and the RunningforJosie campaign, Seamus hopes to raise €200,000 for two Irish suicide awareness charities, Pieta House and Living Links Tipperary.  RunningforJosie is in memory of Seamus’s mother Josie who he lost to suicide as an 11 year old boy.

Sandra Johnson (USA)

Sandra is running the Antarctic Ice Marathon on behalf of Lockwood Animal Rescue Center (LARC) which offers a therapeutic work environment for returning combat veterans and a forever home to wolves, wolfdogs, coyotes, horses, parrots and other animals. Sandra has run 16 marathons, including six Honolulu marathons, six USMC marathons, two Disney World marathons, one of those done in conjunction with a half marathon (Disney’s Goofy Challenge) one Blue Angels marathon and one University of Illinois marathon. She has also run numerous half marathons, cross country races and three Oahu perimeter (134 miles) relay races. Sandra is a member of Marathon Maniacs.

Alan Kowalczyk (POL)

Alan started to run in 2013.  His first marathon was in 2014 and since then he has finished 15 marathons with a personal best of 03:59:30 at the 2015 New York City Marathon.  Alan is a competitor seeking to join the Seven Continents Marathon Club with a finish at the Ice Marathon.  He has already finished Europe (Paris), North America (New York City), South America (Rio de Janeiro), Australia (Sydney), Asia (Tokyo) and Africa (Running the Rift Marathon) with his last one Antartica(Antarctic Ice Marathon). Alan has finished 3 of the World Marathon Majors (Tokyo, Chicago, New York City) and his goal is to finished the next 3 (Berlin, London and Boston) before 2023.

David Kuhne (AUS)

David is a quiet accountant by day but at weekends he continues to shuffle through marathons. He has completed all World Majors and the Antarctic Ice marathon will complete the 7 continents. David’s fastest time is 2.57 and he expects to double that time in the Antarctic.

Sisi Liang (CHN)

There are two things in nature that Sisi is addicted to; one is the blue ocean and the other is the white snow. For Sisi, they have become the love and joy of her life! As a professional diver, and a runner, she wants to spend her life exploring its depth and measure its breadth. The mysterious continent of Antarctica, here she comes!

Tommy Little (AUS)

The Antarctic Ice Marathon will be Tommy’s first marathon. He wanted to win the first marathon he competed in and so looked up winning times from around the world, saw that Antarctica was the slowest and so thought naturally that would therefore be the easiest to win. It’s this exact type of thinking that have led Tommy’s family and colleagues to label him an “absolute idiot”. However he’s also an idiot on a mission. Tommy and his mates are using the run to raise money for Spinal Cord Injuries Australia. They’ve raised over 100k so far to fund vital research into finding a cure for those effected by a spinal cord injury. Tommy wants to live in a world where everyone has the physical ability to embark on missions as stupid as this one is. 

Sha Mao (CHN)

In 2017, she completed the World Marathon Majors. In 2018, she completed the North Pole Marathon and Volcano Marathon. After Antarctic Ice Marathon and a race in Australia, she will be very happy to join The Seven Continents Marathon Club and the Marathon Grand Slam Club.

Tomasz Maslanka (POL)

Tomasz is a 34 year old amateur runner who has been actively running since 2016 when he finished his home city of Wroclaw, Poland half-marathon and full marathon. Tomasz has already completed marathons on 5 continents - Europe (Wroclaw), North America (New York), Asia (Dubai), Africa (Big 5 Marathon) and South America (Buenos Aires) and after a finish at Antarctica his plan for 2019 is to run a marathon in Australia and become a member of The 7 Continents Marathon Club. As a passionate traveler he aims to visit unique spots together with running - so the marathons are part of a new adventure. He cannot wait to set foot on Antarctica.

Ilya Morozov (RUS)

This will be the first marathon ever for Ilya. She is excited to journey to Antarctica with her friend Kirill.  

Carl Mourisse (BEL)

Krill Prokofyev (RUS)

The Antarctic Ice Marathon is going to be Kirill’s 2
nd marathon. He thinks it is a brilliant idea to run a marathon in such a fascinating place as the life of a man should be full of thesechallenges. For Kirill, it is important to him and his friends toface and overcome challenges and to become stronger all the time. Kirill loves life and wants to live it well.  The Ice Marathon is part of this goal.  He will also be at the Ice Marathon to supporthis  friend Ilya.

Roma Puisiene (LTU)

The Antarctic Ice Marathon will be the first marathon for both Roma and Algirdas.  They are not sure whether to call themselves adventurous or just crazy, choosing the Antarctic Ice Marathon challenge as a Christmas gift for one another on Christmas Eve last year. It has since been a crazy year for Roma and Algirdas as they changed their usual mountain biking, skiing, and bushido training routine to running. Both have been happy they made the Ice Marathon their goal as it helped to return them to a more professional and disciplined training life. Roma and Algirdas have both been a semi professional sports level all their lives, participating many mountainbikemountainbike orienteering and multisport competitions of prolonged duration, so both feel ready to face Antarctic challenge.  Roma competed for the Lithuanian mountain bike orienteering team for 5 years and was the main organizer of World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championship in Vilnius, Lithuania in 2017. Algirdas favourite sport is biathlon, also bushido instead of traditional cross fit training, but he is most famous as a dental surgeon in his daily professional life.

Ray loves to run.  Each summer he averages 2-3 marathons and a few half-marathons when the time allows. His favorites include: Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon (Mpls, MN), Grandma’s Marathon (Duluth, MN) Mankato Marathon (MN), Men’s Health URBANTHLON (Chicago) and Gopher to Badger Half-Marathon (MN/WI). Ray will be running as his wife’s (Annie Young) sighted running guide for the Antarctic Ice Marathon.

Anders Rodenberg (DEN)

Anders started running regularly after losing a bet; he had not run for 4 years and had to do a half marathon without any training. He 
finished, but walked like a duck for two days. he ran  his first marathon in Geneva and latest marathon was in the US. When he was 9 years old his father went on an expedition to Antarctica so going to the white continent has been a dream for Anders ever since. What better way to combine a childhood dream with running a Marathon? Fun fact – Anders will be wearing the same jacket to Antarctica that his father wore 26 years ago.

Frank Schelstraete (BEL)

Alexander Rudiger (AUT)

Alexander is an Austrian television presenter, entrepreneur, adventurer and motivational speaker who is known to a large audience on the public television show Moneymaker. He is an avid adventurer who is just as happy in the mountains as on the road. Alexander completed the North Pole Marathon in both 2013 and 2018 as well as the Volcano Marathon in 2014 and 2018. He was born in Vienna in 1969 and is the father of a fourteen-year-old boy.

Jingrui Shi (CHN)

Jingrui has finished 8 half-marathons and looks forward to her run in Antarctica!

Lachlan Spark (AUS)

Lachlan is a 39 year old filmmaker and adventure-lover based in Melbourne, Australia. The Ice Marathon will be his 8th marathon, and while he’s desperate to crack the 3 hour mark one day, he has come to terms with the fact that it’s unlikely to happen on December 13th. Lachlan’s next big fitness goal (other than sub-3) is to run an ultra marathon in 2019, and one day have a crack at the Hawaii Ironman. Lachlan is running the Antarctic Ice Marathon with three of his best mates; Campbell Brown, Tommy Little and Justin Quill — none of whom have run a marathon before, so he has felt like the mother hen getting them prepped. Of course, they’ve all ignored every piece of advice he has offered. In attending this marathon, Lachlan will miss his first wedding anniversary, but he cannot think of a better reason to receive a lifetime of dirty looks than running a marathon on a glacier in Antarctica. Bring it on!

Jill Stevens (USA)

Jill looks forward to embarking on this adventure. To date she has completed 8 marathons in total and a finish at the Ice Marathon will be her completion of a marathon on all 7 continents which she is very excited about.

He Su (CHN)

The 2018 Antarctic Ice Marathon will be the 30th marathon for He Su.  His best marathon record is a 3:56:54 from 2015 and he reached the summit of Kilimanjaro in 2001.  He is looking forward to completing a marathon on Antarctica. 

Piotr Suchenia (POL)

Piotr is 38 years old and comes from Gdynia in Poland. He is a marathon runner, blogger, personal trainer and employee of Gdynia Sport Center. Piotr has run 32 marathons and in 2017 he won the FWD North Pole Marathon. He has run in Spitsbergen, Norway, Greenland, Jamaica, Thailand, Australia, Curacao and many other places in the world He loves to travel the world, especially in the Arctic. Isaac Thyer (AUS)

Isaac is a Urologist and hopes to complete 7 marathons on 7 continents. The Antarctic Ice Marathon will be number 6. 

Huaming Sun (CHN)

Huaming has finished 150+ marathons and in 2017 completed the World Marathon Majors. 

John Trbovich (USA)

John has run 20+ marathons with a personal best of 3:10.  He notes that PR was a loooong time ago.  At the Ice Marathon his goal is to have a good time, finish the race and visit the 7t Coontinent!  John is married with three children.

Yongming Wang (CHN)

Nick-named "popcorn", Yongming has finished the World Marathon Majors and been to running events in Gobi desert 7 times! “Outperforming the opponent is competition, outperforming self is practice.”

Yuqiang Wei (CHN)

The age of 50 is the age of knowing the destiny, and Yuqiang’s hope is to travel and see more of the outside world. His five-year long-distance running experience has made him fall in love with running. As As a result, Antarctica and the Antarctic Ice Marathon became a destination he longed to see. “Antarctica continent, here I come, I will be intimately interacting with you, and thank you for your acceptance.”

Christopher Weir (USA)

Chris has competed 5 marathons to date with his fastest time being 4 hours.  The Antarctic Ice Marathon is his first extreme event.  Chris is from Flower Mound Texas; he has two daughters and one son that will be cheering him on from home.  He has started multiple businesses over the years starting his business when he was just 24 years old.  Currently he own and operatesLead Concepts employing 30 people. 

Robert White (USA)

Rob has been doing triathlons and endurance events since 1991.  He has finished 15 Ironman events and his best marathon was at the Portland Marathon in 1997 with a time of 3:20.  In 2015, he completed the North Pole Marathon. His current goal is to complete an Ironman on each continent with the two pole marathons. After the Antarctic Ice Marathon, he will have three more to go.

Congning Xiao (CHN)

Congning  believes running gives the power of a light body, rich thoughts, and the enjoyment of a pure and powerful loneliness. Congning is a simple runner, not looking for any medal event, just for this wonderful loneliness.

Dhananjay Yellurkar (IND)

Dhananjay (DJ) is running the Antarctic Ice Marathon in his quest to join The 7 Continents Marathon Club. He is 55 years old and has finished running marathons in Asia, North America, Europe and Africa and this will be his fifth continent. DJ was a pacer (6 hour bus) in the 2014 edition of Mumbai Marathon. He started running long distance post his coronary bypass surgery in 2009 and has completed over 10 marathons.  He wants to bust the myth that people who have had a bypass surgery cannot run marathons. DJ lives in Mumbai, India with his wife, two kids and pet dog and works with an Infrastructure Finance Company.

Annie Young (USA)

Annie loves adventure. The Antarctic Ice Marathon will be her first ever marathon. Annie is a USAF blinded veteran and will be guided by seasoned marathon runner and husband, Raymundo Quintana.

Jing Zhu (CHN)

Ms. Jing Zhu is the Founder, Chairperson & CEO of China Hospitality Technology Alliance. Jing been CEO of 3D Networks GrChina a Hospitality tech solution focused biz since 2006, got numerous awards as of Most Innovative hospitality industry Leader in China, was also recognized by HITEC/HFTP as one of most outstanding females in global hospitality technology field. In June 2018, Jing was inducted into HFTP’s Hall of Fame. She’s been keen on running for more than 30 years. Over the past several years, she has finished over 20 marathons completing the World Marathon Majors at the 2018 London Marathon! Most recently she just completed the Shanghai International Marathon  On November 18th.  In addition to Shanghai, over the past two years Jing has completed  the 2016 Berlin Marathon, the 2017 Tokyo Marathon, Boston Marathon, Chicago Marathon, and New York Marathon as well as the 2018 London Marathon and Moscow Marathon.

Junsong Zhu (CHN)

Junsong started running in 2013 when his weight reached 180 pounds and he finished 1st marathon in 2016. Running gives Junsong a lot! Apart from running, he also likes to travel, enjoys photography, and play tennis.
