Webb and Camelio take 2015 Antarctic Ice Marathon Titles

November 24, 2015

Great Britain's Brian Webb and Chile's Silvana Camelio took the men's and women's titles at the 2015 Antarctic Ice Marathon.

The eleventh edition of Ice Marathon, which is the southernmost marathon in the world, took place in the vicinity of Union Glacier camp on 20th November. Conditions were overcast for much of the event with temperatures hovering in the -17C to -20C range.

Fifty-five competitors representing 22 nations elected to run in the competition, with forty-seven running the full marathon distance of 42.195km and eight taking part in the half-marathon option. Indeed, all 7 continents were represented in the race as several of the competitors were resident at the camp for the Antarctic 'summer' season.

It was a British 1-2-3 in the men's race as Webb withstood a very close challenge from Luke Wigman, runner-up in the 2014 North Pole Marathon, to take the title in a time of 3:35:25 hrs. Webb's time was less than one minute outside the existing race record, set by Petr Vabrousek, a two-time long distance World Cup winner at triathlon. Ben Walmsley finished in third place.

Silvana Camelio (CHL) led from start to finish to take the female title in a time of 4:40:01 hrs, ahead of renowned ultra runner Nahila Hernandez (CUB/MEX) and Eleanor Dorran (IRL) in second and third places, respectively.

It was very successful day for the race participants. They not only all finished the event, but a remarkable eighteen competitors crowned their achievement by becoming members of The 7 Continents Marathon Club. Among this group was 72-year-old Mikio Kawamoto of Japan, the oldest competitor to complete the Antarctic Ice Marathon.
